The showcase presented here incorporates various artifacts from my sport coaching and leadership, and p-12 school and postsecondary leadership concentrations. The journey I took will be revealed by way of the following artifacts which illustrate the most profound lessons I learned along the way.

to lead.

Moments of Truth

Leadership is a fascinating subject that I am extremely curious and passionate about. The very first course I took involved examining leadership in a fresh way that encouraged me to get in touch with my sense of self and to start making small - but intentional - efforts to incorporate various forms

of leadership into my daily routine. Using inspiration from Drew Dudley (2010) and his Ted Talk (shown above) that discussed the often undervalued and underappreciated impact that we can have on each other as well as the focus on Kouzes & Posner's (2010) five practices of an exemplary leader. I wrote a paper that examined two leaders who I respect and want to emulate as I progress throughout my career. Please click on the image of Kouzes & Posner's (2010) page excerpt to read about it.

Leadership Philosophy

Head and heart. The work that I completed in understanding my leadership style was (and always will be) a matter of those two items. Additionally, this was my first attempt at using Prezi as a platform to present my discoveries. It was an extremely enjoyable process that has resulted in a constant reminder of my perspectives and how they have evolved as I have progressed throughout my career, master's program, and life.

Health & Recovery

Building sound athletes starts with basic physiological needs of nurturing the body from within. All the talent and natural ability an athlete holds will be for not if they cannot learn how to take care of themselves off the field. Using the glycemic index I created a handout (click the image above) that covered the best types of foods to fuel, replenish, and stay hydrated when one is active. A few highlights include a P-Chart for hydration and six recovery snacks that are intended for the athlete to cut out and keep them for reference.

Strength & Conditioning

Injuries - especially those that involve the knee - are the most common in soccer. Injury prevention is essential in protecting athletes and is the reasoning behind efforts for a warm-up and a cool-down period when practicing or competing . During the season or throughout the off-season it is important to have a sound training program to strengthen the areas that are prone to injuries. Click on the image above to view the injury prevention program I developed.

Compliance

Law and compliance are topics that I am well aware of in my profession as an assistant health and safety coordinator. Reviewing the facts in an unbiased manner is a valuable lesson I learned. Click on the image above for a work sample on Title IX requirements. Additionally, documentation and providing rationale for decisions made and actions taken is essential for ensuring the organization will be able to adequately defend itself in the event of a lawsuit.

Motivation & Performance

Exploring motivation was a topic I researched - and still continue to do so - that led me to Daniel Pink and his views on what motivates us and how intrinsic and extrinsic stimuli can be harnessed in the workplace and on the soccer field. View Pink's Ted Talk and catch his fire for effective

ways to motivate individuals across all platforms. The result of my research I called my coaching plan of action and can be accessed by clicking on the flow theory graph directly below.

Transmitting Information

Most recently I became aware of new forms of presenting information with emphasis on graphic design through use of an infographic. Children and adults acquire knowledge and develop in different ways. There are a variety of theories that are used to explain how one becomes more knowledgeable throughout their life; most are developed through education and life experiences. The infographic on the right (click to see the full version) depicts these differences which is relevant for those who teach and coach individuals of all ages. These theories have tied into the principles that I have studied and are applicable to my professional life as I coach and mentor my employees, and helps me understand the progression in my own development.

Facilitation

After completing our annual health and safety audits during the fall of 2014 it was clear that there was still much work to be done on educating our partners across the division about expectations of compliance training and standards. I was able to utilize my knowledge to develop a training and professional development program to update our health and safety best practices course that is offered to new managers within the division of Residential and Hospitality Services (RHS). Select the

Safe at State image to view the outline for the program. On the left is the document that was created as a result of my new understanding of Infographics utilized as visual designs to display information in an easy and elegant way. With these two resources it is our goal to enhance the safety culture in RHS and ensure that compliance and safety initatives are upheld.
